If you’re looking for ways to make your lifestyle more eco-friendly, but don’t feel ready for a full overhaul, then focusing on the morning portion of your day is a great place to start. These small swaps can make all the difference and can also send you money, and will soon naturally feel a part of your routine.
Remove plastic bottles from your shower routine
Firstly, if you take a look in your shower, you’ll probably see that there are plenty of plastic bottles for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face washes and more. So, have a look online and order yourself some plastic-free toiletries.
You can get bars of toiletries online which are so much better for the environment, rather than relying on plastic bottles which often can’t fully be recycled. Whilst recycling is of course fantastic, if we can avoid needing to recycle completely, that’s the best option!
Brew your coffee at home
The next step is to brew your coffee at home! Getting a takeaway paper cup with a plastic lid, or a plastic cup for iced coffee, really adds up. So instead, you should upgrade your home setup! To start with, we’d recommend getting yourself an AeroPress which is fantastic for espresso, so you can make cafe-grade coffee without needing to pay for a full espresso setup.
One thing that helps to recreate cafe style coffee is to grind your beans at home. You can buy pre-ground beans, but it’s difficult to create great coffee at home when they’re not super fresh. You can get hand grinders if you travel and want to take it with you, or more affordable options like the DF54 grinder provide exceptional results without costing a fortune!
Get yourself a reusable mug and you can take your drink on the road with you! You’ll soon make back the initial cost in the savings you make from your home setup and not needing to buy coffee on the go everyday!
Turn off your appliances
This is a small change that adds up! Turning off any appliances before you leave the house may seem small, but switching off your TV, extension cords, speakers and anything else plugged into the wall saves a small amount of electricity, to save you money and to help the environment. When this becomes a habit you won’t even notice you’re doing it!
Eat a plant-based breakfast
Another good way to reduce your environmental impact is to eat a plant-based breakfast. Reducing your meat and dairy intake is great for the environment, and if you don’t want to commit to a fully plant-based diet, breakfast is an easy swap!
There are so many options, such as porridge made with oat milk (which is delicious and creamy) with your favourite toppings, tofu scramble breakfast wraps, banana pancakes, a coconut yogurt bowl with granola and fruit, or avocado on toast. Good for your gut, better for the environment, it’s a win-win!
Getting as many of your ingredients from local grocers is also a wonderful way to reduce your impact on the environment and support local economies.
Take walk, cycle or take public transport to work
Our eco-friendly travel tip is to jump out of your car and onto your feet! If you currently drive to work, it’s not very effective in terms of being eco-friendly (a better option is if you have an electric car). So, if you have the option to, you should try to walk, cycle or take public transport to work. Many workplaces offer cycle to work schemes where they may pay for the bike for you which is ideal, or getting public transport is often cheaper than paying for petrol yourself.
