In The Notebook, poor farmer Noah Calhoun falls in love with rich heiress Allie Hamilton. Knowing her family will never accept him as a potential suitor, he endeavors to renovate the Windsor Plantation for her, meeting her every need for it. Here are the nine changes that Noah puts into the house from The Notebook.
1. Second-Story Porch
In the movie, you actually see Noah tear down the second-story porch. He hitches the railing to his pickup truck, then drives forward to tear it off. That makes the home have the second-story porch only around the sides and the back.
2. Central Staircase
Noah points out the central staircase the first time him and Allie visit the home, mentioning that the previous owner proposed to his wife on it. He refinishes the steps to make sure they’re safe to walk on in the new home.
3. Dining Room
When Noah and Allie visit the home, they share a picnic on the floor of the dining room. When she comes back, however, Noah has refinished the piano, removed the cobwebs, and created a gorgeous dining room table for himself and Allie.
4. Porch Swing
Outside, a porch swing hangs from the second-story porch to the side. On a hot summer night, Noah and Allie sit on the porch swing and Noah reads to Allie.
5. Painting Room
One of the things Allie desperately wanted in the house was a painting room. That painting room is something that Noah gives to her in the final renovation of the house. It’s even stocked with paints, canvases, and an easel, and it overlooks the water.
6. Master Bedroom
After Allie and Noah spend a night together, Allie wakes up to a number of arrows on the floor, directing her to the painting room. The way she runs to the painting room makes it clear that the master bedroom is on the opposite side of the house.
7. Structural Renovations
There are a variety of structural renovations required to make sure the house is sturdy and actually livable. These aren’t renovations that the viewers get to see on screen, but it’s likely that Noah would have had to replace electrical systems, add plumbing, fix the roof, stabilize the chimney, level the foundation, and refinish the floor.
8. Landscaping
The landscaping of the house was completely overgrown, with brambles and fallen trees everywhere. Noah fixes this, with a gorgeous landscaping job that ends up creating a lush garden.
9. Repainting
Lastly, Noah repaints the entire house. He paints the house exactly how Allie said she wanted it – white with blue shutters. It’s what really cements the house as something Allie’s always wanted.
Conclusion
There was a lot that Noah had to do to make the Windsor Plantation house not just livable, but actually beautiful. It might not have seemed like much in the movie, but to recreate the process in real life, it would have been tedious and expensive. That just shows Noah’s dedication toward Allie.
